Planning For Our Future
The Vision and Mission Statement

The ISNO improves the health and educational outcomes of children by strengthening the practices of the professional school nurse to promote the delivery of quality health programs in schools and communities.

 

ISNO Goals:
The planners acknowledge that the goals are interrelated and that some of the strategies identified to meet one goal may influence the implementation of other goals.

 

Practice
Goal 1: ISNO will promote school nurse professional practice, development and advancement.

Actions:

1. Formulate a task force to develop Iowa School Nurse Manual
 
2. Provide quality continuing educational opportunities using a variety of teaching methods, including new school nurse orientation, annual conference and ICN / regional offering.

3. Promote National Certification of School Nurses by providing information at conferences, newsletter, and website

4. Organize and encourage utilization of educational scholarships by creating and disseminating application.

5. Formulate a task force to develop and disseminate school nurse evaluation tool that meets state standards.

6. Develop role of ISNO Special Education  Resource Nurse

7. Create a task force to develop and implement a new school nurse mentoring program 

Research
Goal 2: ISNO will promote research to validate, enhance and improve the practice of the professional school nurse

Actions:

1. Continue collaboration with University of Iowa College of Nursing for the Iowa School Nurse Research Consortium.

2. Organize and encourage utilization of project / research scholarships by creating and disseminating application

3. Offer annual evidence based practice education via continuing education offerings, newsletters, websites, and conferences

4. Create a standardized statewide school nurse data collection system.

Public Policy
Goal 3: ISNO will influence the development of educational and health policy at the local, state, and national levels

Actions:

1. Pursue the enforcement of the recommended nurse to student ratio of 1:750

2. Develop legislative committee to influence legislation related to school nursing and children’s health issues

3. Continue to collaborate with other professional organizations with similar interests.

 

Image Identity
Goal 4: ISNO will increase the visibility and image of the professional school nurse in the school and community

Actions:

1. Develop the role of the ISNO Public Relations Chair

2. Continue partnerships with other professional organizations with similar interests.

 

 

 

Leadership
Goal 5: ISNO will provide, promote, and develop leadership among Iowa school nurses.

Actions:

1. Organize annual school nurse leadership workshop

2. Provide networking opportunities for Iowa school nurses

3. Encourage involvement in ISNO leadership activities.

 

 

Fiscal Resources
Goal 6:  ISNO will demonstrate fiscal responsibility

Actions:

1. Seek out sources of funding

2. Explore opportunities of grant writing

 

Governance and Human Resources
Goal 7:  ISNO will be structured and governed for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in advancing its mission

Actions:

1. Continue to enhance communication with Iowa School Nurses through the networking efforts of regional leaders.

2. Implement the use of policy and procedure manual.

3.  Develop board member only page on the website.

4. Survey Iowa school nurses for input and evaluation of the organization

 

Membership
Goal 8:  Increase membership by 20%

Actions:

1. Survey Iowa school nurses for input and evaluation of ISNO

2. Consider membership incentives

3. Continue active communication with members regarding membership status

4. Encourage membership of non-school nurses to enhance collaboration efforts.
